Acute Care

Acute Care Unit

The Acute Care Unit provides 24 hour medical, surgical and sub-acute nursing care to adults and children.  Patients are cared for by a competent staff of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Certified Nurses Aids.  Our team of professionals work with the patient and family to make your stay as comfortable and pleasant as possible while following the medical care plan designed for you.  Your health and comfort are important to us and our goal is to meet your needs and exceed your expectations.

To help us take better care of you, please bring a complete list of the medications and the dosages you are currently taking. This list should include over-the-counter medications, vitamins and herbal preparations. It will be very important for the nurses and physicians to know of any allergies to any medications you may have.

Hospitalists

Hospitalists manage and coordinate your care while you are in the hospital.  These physicians work in the hospital, which allows them to follow up on tests and adjust your treatment throughout your stay as needed.  Your hospitalist will meet with you and your family to provide updates on your care.  Your Hospitalist will discuss with you any lab results, changes in medication, discharge needs, and follow up.

A Houlton Regional Hospitalist is on duty 24hours a day.  The Hospitalist rotate and so you may meet one or more of our physicians during your hospital stay.  Your hospitalist does not replace your primary care physician (PCP).

Your Hospitalist will communicate with your PCP to ensure that your PCP is informed of your treatment plan and progress.  Once you are discharged from the hospital, you will return to your PCP for your medical care. If you do not have a PCP we will help you establish one.

Swing bed services allow our patients to remain in the hospital for follow-up.  Swing bed patients may have been hospitalized at HRH and require more time to heal, or they may have been hospitalized in a facility away from home and transferred back to HRH for their swing bed stay.
