Houlton Family Practice has added a Pain Clinic to their list of services. The Pain Clinic specializes in pain management for patients suffering from back, neck, or joint pain; arthritis, headaches, and sports-related injuries to help reduce pain and experience a better quality of life.  Pain Management can be a complex medical problem that simply writing a prescription can’t solve.  It may take a combination of cutting edge pain treatments to manage chronic pain.  Our patients receive the very latest medial and interventional treatments in one convenient place from a highly skilled, compassionate, coordinated team.  You will work closely with our pain management specialist, Matt Cowan, PA-C to customize your pain management care plan that may include:

  • Nerve blocks/ablations
  • Steroid injections for musculoskeletal pain
  • Kyphoplasty
  • Joint injections/ultrasound guided
  • Medication management and Consults
  • Trigger point injections
  • Physical Therapy

Meet Our Team

Matt Cowan, PA-C

Matt has practiced as a Physician Assistant for 21 years.  He has been at Houlton Regional Hospital since 2008  providing care in Houlton Family Practice and most recently in Houlton Internal Medicine.  “I felt there was a need for this service locally and in order for it to happen I decided to become involved.”

Dr. Peter Marshall

Dr. Marshall is on site in the Operating Room twice a month.  Dr. Marshall is a board certified physician with the American Board of Internal Medicine, American Board of Anesthesiology, and the American Board of Pain Medicine. Dr. Marshall is a 1985 graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts and he completed his medical internships through the Hartford Hospital Internal Medicine Residency and the Hartford Hospital Anesthesiology Residency. Dr. Marshall was president of Penobscot Anesthesia from 2001-2004, Clinical Director of EMMC Cardiac Anesthesia Services from 1991-1999, and Clinical Director of EMMC Pain Services from 1991-1999 and 2005-2016. Dr. Marshall also served in the Army Reserve 405th Combat Support Hospital in West Hartford, Connecticut. He was Chief of Anesthesia, Major rank, and was also active duty during Desert Storm in 1991.

Our team also includes Surgical Services, Anesthesia, and Radiology.
