Houlton Regional Hospital – Healthcare for Northern Maine

Houlton Regional Hospital has announced the retirement of Janet Parker, M.D. on March 31st, after 40 years of medical practice in Houlton. Dr. Parker and her husband, Dr. Donald Brushett, moved to Houlton in 1977 and set up private practice in Family Medicine and Obstetrics at 59 Bangor St. where they spent the majority of their career. Dr. Parker has worked at Houlton Family Practice for the last 5 years.

Dr. Parker was the first female physician to practice in the Houlton area. In addition to doing Family Practice for 40 years, she delivered babies at Houlton Regional Hospital for 10 years and worked in the Emergency Room for 15 years.  She was a member of the Board of Directors of Blue Cross / Blue Shield of Maine when it was a nonprofit Maine-based medical insurance company, and is a past President of the Houlton Regional Hospital Medical Staff.

Dr. Parker will be joining her husband in retirement who retired in December 2014. They will continue to live in Houlton and will spend part of each summer in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, where Janet was born. Dr. Parker and Dr. Brushett have 3 children.  Chris is a biomedical engineer in Nashua, New Hampshire, David is a municipal energy engineer in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Katie is a physician, in Obstetrics and Gynecology residency in Brisbane, Australia.

Dr. Parker says “it has been a privilege and a joy to have been able to provide care for families in this area for all these years. Practicing medicine in Northern Maine has given our lives great meaning….and it has been an honor to have worked with so many dedicated and compassionate physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, and support staff. I will miss everybody.”
