Houlton Regional Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop

October 30th, 2008

HRH Auxiliary Gift Shop Volunteers are (from left to right): Elinor Harvey, President; Glynn Porter, Manager; Joan Logan, Manager; Nancy Bridgham, Donna Regent, Helen Woods, Ruth Levesque, Nancy Beals, Louise Hamilton, Frances Bishop, Mildred Reece, Pat Chase, and Lois Jeffrey. Absent when the photo was taken were Barbara Grant, Vilda Adams and Lois Ward.

For more than 40 years the hospital gift shop has been serving the community, and many willing volunteers make it possible. There are no paid positions and the shop depends on volunteers to staff the shop, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The managers and buyers, Joan Logan and Glynn Porter, are also volunteers. The shop is not trying to compete with downtown, but to serve the hospital community. The candy concession is popular with the hospital staff and having postage stamps available for sale is a bonus. Thanks to the support from the hospital staff and visitors to the gift shop, the gift shop treasury has been able to present the hospital and the HSF with over $100,000. Some of the equipment that has been purchased as a result of these donations have been the Sophie Mammo Room, OB Fetal Monitors, Cardiac Rehab Exercise Equipment, Nuclear Med update, Bariatric Wheelchair, Baby Books, Portrait for Pediatrics Scholarships, and Ultrasound equipment for Positive Steps, just to name a few.

Joan and Glynn have been fortunate to have excellent volunteers who keep the gift shop running smoothly. Two of their popular annual fund raisers include the May Fudge Baskets and the Christmas Giving Tree.

Items in the shop are purchased from over 25 different companies. Over the years the Rada knives continue to be popular as well as the modestly priced greeting cards. Recently a new line of jewelry has been introduced and it has been well received. There are many other unusual and attractive gifts including baby items and a new line of John Deere merchandise. At times it seems like a lot for them to do, but doing it together has been a lot of fun; they like people and shopping.
